Book Beginnings & The Friday 56 #12

"Book Beginnings" on Friday is hosted by Rose City Reader, the meme encourages to share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book.

"The Friday 56" is also a weekly event, hosted by Freda's Voice, where you find any sentence, (or few, just don’t spoil it) that grab you from page 56 or 56% in your book/eReader (If you have to improvise, that's ok.)

TGIF! I say that for many reasons, but mainly because this is my favorite feature. Something about taking a deeper look into the books we're reading makes them that much more special, so weekly, I find myself excited for Friday.

Who knew pet-sitting could be so dangerous…or so sexy?!
Socially awkward Emma “Spider” Fisher prefers her laptop to people, so she’s more than happy to oblige her boss when he asks her to pet- and housesit while he honeymoons in London.
But it doesn’t take long for accident-prone Spider to lose a dog, get locked out of the house, and set off the house alarm!
Thankfully, her hot new neighbor is more than happy to come to her rescue. But Noah West is a mystery to Spider—and one she intends to solve.

“Oh yeah. She was gonna kill that mutt when she got her hands on him. And the cat too, just because.”

I laughed hard at this because I have 4 cats and I have these exact same thoughts a lot. Sometimes they just drive you to that point!

“Geez, she was hopeless. Maybe she needed to find another job, working with a bunch of unattractive nerds. Or women. Maybe she should become a nun. Wait. Were nuns allowed to use computers? Probably not.”

Chandler Raines and her “dad” are on the run. Never staying in one place for very long. It’s just not safe. When they arrive in Lafayette, Louisiana, Chandler quickly realizes this is the place she wants to call home. Friends, a cute boy, and competitive cheerleading have her taking dangerous risks to have the life she always wanted. Risks she promised she wouldn’t take.
When her lies catch up to her, a decision has to be made. Stay or run? Will the evil that’s chased them for the last four years catch up to them? When Chandler’s past comes screeching into the present she’ll have to sacrifice everything to keep what she loves safe. But will it be enough?

"I woke to my heart punching in my chest as my "dad" gripped my shoulder and shook hard."

Seeing as the quotations allude to the fact that her "dad" isn't her dad, I'm befuddled. It's clear there's something wrong, but what?

"He opened the envelope and pulled out the pictures inside Three teenage girls laughing as they stood next to a school bus. The same girls hugging at what looked like some kind of race track. And one of the girls sitting on a bench holding hands with a boy. The last photo turned his face into a hard mask. "Who is he?" Jameson barked."

Until next time,

  4. I love everything about Spirited Away. The title and cover, the characters names, the set up. I'm going to have to read it. I've also read other books by Elena Dillon so I'm sure I'd enjoy Shimmer.

Here is my 56 from I'm With You- http://fuonlyknew.com/2014/08/29/the-friday-56-34-im-with-you-by-taylor-dean/

  5. Both of those look pretty good but the Spirited Away seriously cracked me up. I've lived with enough cats that I completely understand the sentiment!

  6. Just wondering if you've posted a review of "Spirited Away"? It sounds awesome, but I know it's part of a series and I'm wondering if you have to read the other books to follow the story. Thanks!
